About Our Pastor

Rev. Wilmer E. Cooper, Pastor

Western Avenue Baptist Church

• Serving in a bi-vocational role (Pastor.Teacher and Public School Administrator), Rev. Wilmer Cooper worked as a

  college instructor, high school/junior high science teacher, principal, and superintendent in several schools across

  central and western Oklahoma for 28 years. As a result of his service and leadership in public school leadership, he

  was invited to collaborate with two other Superintendents as co-authors of a book entitled leading Schools of

   Adversity:Urban, Suburban, Rural;

 

• Pastor. Cooper and his wife, Vanessa, moved to Oklahoma City in 2015; he currently serves as the Pastor of Western

  Avenue Baptist Church. In addition to his pastor/teacher responsibilities, Pastor Cooper spends his time as a faculty

  member for the T. Oscar Chappel Oklahoma School of Religion, the Oklahoma State Convention's Congress of

  Christian Education, He was recently appointed as State Director of Christian Education for the Oklahoma Missionary

  Baptist State Convention and Dean for the Oklahoma State Congress of Christian Education.

 

• In 2016 Pastor Cooper will complete his doctorate degree in Educational Leadership at Oral Roberts University. He

  prayerfully hopes to expand his ministry in Christian education, with a two-fold purpose:

   - promote Christian education leadership development through Christian Leadership schools at the local, state, and

      national level,

   - raise a new generation of church leaders, who are intellectually and spiritually equipped to serve the contemporary

      generation of diverse people.

• Pastor Cooper and Vanessa have seven children, thirteen grand-children, and a ton of siblings and other relatives.
